In this episode of Framework Focus, host Dr. Mark Fulton engages with Jean Hall and Brandi Van Patton from LogiCoy to unravel the significance of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) in Long-Term Care Pharmacy. Jean Hall is the Program Director for PDMP Solutions at Logicoy; Brandi Van Patton is the expert in Pharmacy Informatics.

“Logicoy is great at being transparent,” Van Patton noted. “That data is not ours. It belongs to the state. It belongs to those individuals who are submitting it to the pharmacies.”

”Sometimes there are companies who think technology is the driver of business,” Hall remarked. “Quite honestly, business should be the driver of technology. We see ourselves as the type of technology partner that is here to enable business not drive it. We are here to support what our customers want and need.”

In this conversation, the trio explores how PDMPs contribute to preventing diversion, ensuring patient safety, and addressing the opioid crisis. The episode delves into the specific impact of PDMPs on LTC, covering transitions of care, collaboration among providers, and the evolving role of LTC in this space. The discussion concludes with practical advice for pharmacies on navigating PDMPs.

”There is big money to be made in controlled substances. There are some tremendous issues going on around the country that pharmacists might not be surprised to hear about, but I suspect a lot of the lay people would be very surprised,” Hall said. “There are drugs that they would never imagine being diverted, have high street values, and are being altered into another new and glamorous drug of choice.”

Hall went on to add that PDMPs are all about making our community safer for individuals and all of us collectively. Fulton shared that he has seen an increased role in LTC Pharmacies servicing inpatient rehab, medication-assisted treatment, suboxone clinics, and more.

Another unique part of the conversation centered around the National Association of State Controlled Substance Authorities (NASCA). This organization provides tremendous value to PDMPs and pharmacies through webinars, classes, and an annual conference.

”What I enjoy about NASCA is their dedication to education,” Van Patton shared. “I think it’s the awareness that they bring both on the side of the state and the side of the vendor.”

What is a PDMP?

Opioid overdose and addiction have been declared as an epidemic by the CDC. The central and state government has enacted laws to prevent misuse of such prescription drugs. One of the important programs the state governments are required to implement is the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program. Under this program, the dispensers are required to submit the drugs dispensed to the State-run Prescription Drug Monitoring database, and the prescribers are required to look at the patient’s prescription history before prescribing opioids. LogiCoy has been working on this PDMP-related solution since 2012. Logicoy provides several solutions in this ecosystem meant for state governments, EHR/pharmacy system vendors, healthcare organizations, and providers.
